This is one of the earliest images I took in Iceland — and every time I see it, I am reminded of the first moment of my visit.
I remember looking out the window of the airplane, about fifteen minutes from landing in Keflavík, and seeing the mountains of Iceland in the distance. I began to feel butterflies in my stomach, as if I were about to audition for the role of a lifetime. I had never felt such excitement before.
Iceland tested me — my photography skills, my physical strength — and it was the craziest two-week stretch of my life. "Wild Places" is my way of showing the wonderment that I experienced everywhere in Iceland, starting when I looked out the window of the plane.
It is crucial to pay attention to your first impression of a landscape. Over time, the most amazing aspects of a country — such as the mountains that are present throughout ever corner of Iceland — begin to lose their novelty. If you forget the beauty of your surroundings, your images will lose impact as well. In any case, the first images you take of a scene could very well be the best.
