Jökulsárlón may be one of the few truly crowded places in Iceland. I took this image, though, at a time when no one else was around.
Often, I get to see the world's most beautiful landscapes without any crowds, since I visit them at times that are inconvenient for most people (i.e., sunrise). On my trip to Iceland, in fact, I rarely saw another person while I was photographing landscapes. This image is from about 2 AM, when only the craziest photographers would bother setting up a tripod.
I'm glad I did, though. This image feels chaotic to me, with harsh and dramatic diagonals — yet, the lighting is soft and gentle, and the tones of the ice convey a sense of peace.
Jökulsárlón was waking up, and I was the only one who saw it.
