This image was made during the drive to Seyðisfjörður in Northeast Iceland — perhaps the most beautiful drive I have ever undertaken.
Icy snow covered the landscape in every direction, and a low-lying cloud waited on the road ahead. It was three in the morning, and the sun was just starting to rise over the mountains to my left. It was one of the most memorable moments of my trip.

The yellow pylons in this picture mark where to drive if the road is completely covered by ice. Yes, Iceland is that cool.
The memory of that crazy drive will always be one of my favorites from Iceland, in part because it felt so wild. Without strikingly few signs of life — a few faint tracks in the snow, and little else — it is no stretch to imagine that "Mountain Pass" depicts a lifeless alien planet.
