This image is from Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
I visited this massive waterfall at about 3AM, directly following the most grueling hike of my life. I was in no mood to explore the falls, but I did muster enough energy to photograph this beautiful, fine-art scene.
A telephoto lens compresses a landscape, pushing each layer closer together and removing an element of distance. In some scenes — truly huge scenes like this one — a telephoto can turn a landscape into a piece of semi-abstract art.
Here, as the mist from Dettifoss fades, powerful rapids consume everything in their path. The one rock that remains, though, grounds the composition; without it, this image would not have the same power and scale.
It is worth noting that this is not even the main side of Dettifoss. A bit farther upstream is the grand waterfall itself, blowing mist downstream and high in the air — a spectacle visible for miles. I used this mist, in combination with a lone rock, to show the massive scale of this beautiful scene.
